Double Bay elegance

The approach to the Thornton residence by Arnoldlane was ‘diagnostic’ involving assessing the ills of the previous renovation to an early 1900’s dwelling situated in Double Bay NSW. The client wanted a contemporary space to live in whilst respecting the era of the original home. Arnoldlane opened the space from front to back to address the lack of light and the compartmentalisation of the existing space. The existing stair to the upper remained but the rest of the space was completely opened. Adding a small extension to the side of the house allowing the space to be squared up and adding large windows capturing more natural light. A dramatic five and a half metre long calacatta clad counter links the two living spaces book matched almost perfectly on all faces. The decorative panelling conceals storage cupboards in the main lounge and the laundry downstairs. Three sets of new timber framed double doors on the rear of the house replace the original single access. Traditional parquetry floors were laid warming up the almost all white space adding another layer of classic elegance and sophistication. Serious love for this home!
