Minimal Envy in Brooklyn

As a self-confessed failed minimalist, I find myself torn between envy and admiration for those who can successfully create a minimal space, and moreover, do it well. In this Park Slope townhouse, Brooklyn-based firm, Berheimer Architecture have achieved a serene blend between the original Brooklyn Brownstone and modern design through the use of a simple colour palate; cool greys, warm timbers and white, white, white. Layered with simple and understated, but always beautiful, furniture, the original character of the townhouse plays a defining role in shaping the interiors at the front of the property. Contrasted with the modern extension at the rear, where large windows take full use of views onto the garden and fill the interior with natural light, the building itself creates the canvas for living. The neutrality of the space is occasionally cut through by bursts of colour with cushions, rugs or blankets, as well as focal lighting features in the bedrooms and dining. Beyond this however, the space remains an honest, minimal space. Standing proud of its origins, while still connecting with the modern world. Of Berheimer Architecture, I am a little envious.
