Leather + Steel by Studio Seilern
London based Studio Seilern Architects combined two twin terraces behind historic facades to create one large family home that presents absolute design excellence. The house is composed of one main body of three stories to the street and a two-story extension to the rear garden. The terraces being located in a conservation area provided a challenge for Studio Seilern meeting conservation criteria and materializing the vision of the project. The main entrance, a corridor leads to the open living room that faces onto the rear garden with two bright conservatories each under a single 2.5 x 4 m pane of glass. Over-sized glass doors swivel outward to make a continuous open space between the living room, kitchen and garden terrace. At the core of the building is a spectacular sculptural steel spiral staircase which visually connects all three levels. The leather stair covering and handrails are warm to the touch and absorb both sound and vibrations (yep that’s right leather and steel) . Light falls dramatically around the stair from a skylight above. The skylight opens hydraulically to allow natural ventilation throughout. I know ….. totally breathtaking!
