Milan | Zona Tortona part 2

Having the opportunity once again to attend Milan Design week through Designer Rugs, the first area I ventured to was Zona Tortona for Tortona Design Week, which is a side event to Salone Internazionale del Mobile. This postindustrial area is spread out over 30,000m2 of industrial buildings and small workshops turned into design studios for the event. Tortona Design Week concentrates on mixing leading brands alongside emerging names, fresh young designers next-door to the most famous names in the design world. The notice that I was attending the Milan Furniture Fair was just on a week, so no real time for research but remembering from 2011 that this area that showcased fresh new designers was a hit for me. Moooi was the first place I set upon and from entering I knew that I would be lost in this world for a while.

Below – The PINWU bar table and the coffee table are an ensemble of porcelain tables. The durability and solidness of the material fulfill the requirements of a hard wearing table surface. At the same time, porcelain is a warm and tactile juxtaposed beautifully by the timber.

Below -Harold A expanded metal cabinet that can be used as wardrobe as well as storage for offices. The overlay of the grids composing the cabinet create a Moiré effect which makes the object attractive to observe while walking around it. The net makes it possible to see what is showcased inside the cabinet, giving the possibility to the objects inside to become part of the environment. The minimalistic layout gives to the cabinet a clear and iconic shape.

Below -The F-A-B chair series is based on the idea of the chair acting as a body. The chair can be used nude and bare, but also reveal a whole new personality when dressed in something a little bit more extravagant, thus functioning as a load-bearing structure for textile creations. Designed by Fredrik Färg and Emma Marga Blanche, the F-A-B collection combine industrial production with exclusive handcraft. The chairs are manufactured by the oldest shaker chair factories still in activity in Sweden, while the couture dresses are hand made in the atelier of the design duo in Stockholm. Inspired by the fashion industries, the project aims to bring something more experimental and flexible to the furniture design world.
