You & I + Steve Rosendale

Renowned Melbourne artist, Steve Rosendale is a very talented man whom is about to embark on his greatest opus as he prepares to adorn Collingwood’s “YOU AND I” apartment building with a number of larger than life stencil-style artworks which will adorn the facades. The building represents one of the suburb’s largest residential gentrification projects along the famed Smith Street shopping strip. Custom creating five artworks to grace the building, Rosendale’s portfolio was chosen by the developer, ICD Property due to his unique retro aesthetic and references to underground cinematic culture in which Rosendale is known for. Drawing inspiration from film noir and other classic cinematic scenes, Steve Rosendale said he had always been more interested in the emotions which could be evoked by his paintings, rather than the scenes themselves.“ I loved classic television shows as a youngster – I was hooked on watching Alfred Hitchcock films and film noir so I was really disappointed to find out that the real world looked nothing like what I saw in those programs.“ I missed the bygone styling of this era, but it wasn’t until I started to realise my talents as an artist that I came back to these early memories to influence my work and recreate this fantasy aesthetic”. The You and I, apartment building is a definite nod to Collingwood’s rich heritage as a bohemian community of artists, performers and writers. It gives me hope when I see developers understanding the community and exploring local talent. Nice one You & i !
