Brazilian Dreaming
Last year I was drawn to Studio Guilherme Torres not so much by their design credentials but more by their website, which required you to complete a game Space Invaders (!) to enter. Of course, their work was phenomenal and though the arcade games may have left their website, their design work has only continued to grow stronger.
This project is the principal’s own – a testament as it were to his design beliefs and to the rich Brazilian design aesthetic that permeates all the studio’s work. From previous work we’ve seen from Guilherme Torres, this project is somewhat more subdued, a little more relaxed however in no way less sophisticated.
By far the most striking feature of the house is the cantilevered mass of the first floor. Housing the bedrooms, this hulking box of concrete is juxtaposed with a delicate timber screen along the façade facing the street. The ground floor is dedicated to living areas and the kitchen and throughout the house the furnishings pay further homage to the architect and his ode to Brazilian design. As we head into summer here in Australia, I can only dream of lazing my days away in such a beautiful house!
