Adapting on the Mornington Peninsula

Australian’s are good at adapting. We’ve been forced to do it for as long as we’ve lived here. So when Bower Architects were faced with what they described as a “battle-axe” block of land on the Mornington Peninsula they simply adapted to it. And from that was born the “Hover House.”

The house is formed around a central courtyard that to me is almost an Australian take on a Japanese zen garden, a point that is further reinforced by the vertical timber slat screening and decorative boulder and tree. Inside, the zen continues with a paired back palate of concrete, timber paneling and block work enclosing spaces that are airy, light and unfussy.

Although the house is sparsely furnished it does not feel cold. The expanses of timber together with the rolling lawn in the courtyard and exposure to the environment create a comfortable and relaxed space and, given its location by the beach, is exactly the feeling it should have!
