White Out. A modernist reincarnation
Renovating an existing home can be challenging at the best of times. Add to the mix facade design limitations and design approval from the neighbours and council, these were some of the challenges faced on this modernist renovation. Located on the outskirts of Brussels, is Wemmel, which is well known for its green areas with their luxury villas and not for crisp white modern buildings.
dmvA was commissioned to turn a rather classical house into a contemporary building. However with the neighbours input the contemporary vision began to weaken impact the overall design.
Becoming not a total ‘metamorphosis’ of the existing house, small interventions were made to the facade of the existing house, which was then painted white.
The interior was furnished in black and white. The swimming pool was renovated and framed by an illuminating glazed ‘retaining wall. Two angular sculptural white volumes were added connecting inside and outside, linking house, pool and garden. A perfect example when the project limitations become it’s strengths!
