The Three Parts House

For many people who grew up in the suburbs the sight of the traditional post-war clinker brick house was a monotonous fact of life. Street upon street of virtually identical facades in the distinctive red brick. What a joy it is then to see the sympathetic, if not daring, transformation of this original clinker brick home by Architects EAT in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. The so-called Three Parts House is made up of the Lantern, the Courtyard and the Brickhouse.

The lantern comprises the original front part of the house and takes its name from the frost glass cladding that shrouds the exterior. At night with the light of the house burning the glow of frosted glass creates a soft and dramatic lantern.

The Courtyard is to the rear of the Lantern and connects the front of the house to the Brickhouse at the rear. The Courtyard also serves to let light and ventilation into the middle of the house and creates an open thoroughfare for the family to move about their home.

The Brickhouse takes the original clinker brick and reimagines it into brise-soleil screens that created a perfect juxtaposition to the frost glass cladding .The Brickhouse itself is used by the family for relaxing and entertaining.

I couldn’t think of a better way to overhaul such an iconic Australian architectural style than in the textual and humanizing style that Architects EAT have here.
