Uber Minimalist

I would not call myself a minimalist, at all. So stumbling upon Lukas Machnik was a happy accident. Machnik has described his design philosophy as “uber-minimalist” with clear modernist and strong Bauhaus influences.

Originally from Poland, Machnik is an interior and product designer and self-proclaimed minimalist. After studying and working in New York, he moved to Chicago where he is reinventing the design scene.
Machnik’s style is eclectic and perhaps not for the faint of heart. Part of my attraction to his work is the stark avant-garde environments he creates in his clients’ homes, along with restaurants and retail spaces. This project, Row House, in Chicago’s Bucktown is high value contrast where black is super chic and white is elegant. There are layers of decoration but ultimately refined – accessories are chosen for their tonal value.
Key to the success of a modernist interior is materiality. The palette here is refined and of exceptional quality with large expressions of single materials throughout the project. Warmth is added through animal hides in differing forms as area rugs and textural throws on fabric sofas and leather chaise lounge. This project is an ultimate expression of luxury in materiality and craftsmanship.
