Art and Home

For those with a serious art collection redesigning their home can sometimes mean pairing everything back to ensure the art has the maximum exposure. This was certainly not the case for the couple who own this apartment on the Upper East Side, who enlisted interior design great Stephen Sills to design a home for them that worked with the art and was to become as much of a feature as what was hanging on the wall.
This blending of art and space has been achieved through the meticulous use of the finishes – brushed metal leaf wallpaper lines the ceiling of the family room, hand-painted leather hangings on the walls of the dining room, all the window frames have been gilded and glazed – and the with a mix of sculptural and custom furniture pieces. Living areas have been made into statement rooms with bold colours, rich fabrics and star art pieces, while the bedrooms are cool, calm spaces with soft colours and subdued art.
In a space where Picasso’s, Liechtenstein’s and Kapoor’s all hang on the walls, Sills has achieved the mighty task of giving the interior a sense of purpose and its own identity and in doing so has created the perfect home for this art loving family.
