The playground apartment
In order to redefine the role and function of the traditional kitchen in Taiwan, local studio House Design refurbished the interior of this apartment in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. To achieve this, the architects have integrated living room, dining room and kitchen into a open plan allowing the kitchen to become the center of communication for the family. The clever plan allows the family to fully interact yet the home doesn’t feel or look like a open void. The selection of timber cabinets that don’t match the timber floors, the mix of patterned tile flooring juxtaposed by timber floors seem to break up the zones giving each section its own personality. Bulkheads with varied ceiling heights open the small space whist the exposed brickwork set amongst rendered walls adds texture and depth. The project is pulled together by texture and gentle colours like a family playground.
