Art adds punch
This narrow six story house, converted by architectural designer Maha Kutay of Zaha Hadid fame and Furnished by Francois Catroux is a converted Queen Ann block of apartments in London, England. The family home is filled with a provocative contemporary art collection. The diversity of the collection delivers its message light-heartedly and plays with scale.
A Mickey Mouse inspired figure by the American artist KAWS sits slumped on a landing, while a perky scarlet statuette by Chinese sculptor Ren Sihong strikes a Tai Chi pose, playfully referencing the mass exercise routines of a bygone time in China.
The restrained selection of materials lets the art collection populate the spaces. Mass white on the walls and ceiling planes unifies the spaces and story. In the lounge a large wall sized photorealistic painting on canvas depicts open shelves packed with the filed records of thousands of historic Arab properties as a rebuttal to the argument that Palestine never existed. A definite conversation starter. This converted family home is luxurious, measured and curated – in both art and furniture selection. A stunning conversion.
