A Subtle Spanish Transformation
Things I am currently loving: not being able to see light fixtures. The sight of a light bulb is obtrusive and quite frankly upsetting. This apartment renovation in Mallorca, Spain is a dream to me – no visible lighting except the decorative lamps! And that’s just the beginning of this clever transformation. After lying dormant for seven years the owners worked with a very tight budget to transform the space from drab 60s to reformed chic by employing simple design to make the most of the space.
The apartment was taken back to its bones with unnecessary walls removed to make way for the apartment’s main feature. The timber “box” is an important device as it serves many functions at once and in its own way forces the organization of the living areas. One side forms the kitchen, the other a book case for the living room. Another side frames out the dining area complete with broom closet while the remaining wall forms a gallery space. The box itself was designed around the Golden Principal to ensure the proportions were as subtle and perfect as possible. It is this subtlety in the design that draws me to this apartment – not least of all with the hidden lighting. What a joy!
