The Vines I Like

With elements of Brutalism and Modernism this new construction by L3P Architekten is located in Dielsdorf, Switzerland. The site is located on a vineyard and saying it is small is an understatement! After the removal of border limit clearances only 5 m x 9 m are left over in this steep plot. With a maximum of 83 m2 above-ground level living – most would consider this site unbuildable. Residential building conventions are out here – and this has resulted in some spectacular and innovative design!
Design collaboration between architect Boris Egli and the build engineer has resulted in the steel and concrete framework being incorporated into walls, ceilings, floors and even the bookcase. Design is stripped back to its bare materiality here and complimented by custom joinery and a diverse and curated furniture selection wrapped in a glass sheath.
Architect Egli references the buildings surroundings of a vineyard by using the logic of a vine: a supporting middle wall, platforms and non-bearing windows follow the structure of the stem, the trunk and the hanging fruit. This construction allows for such expanses of glass and the articulation of spaces – faceting the form and envelope.

With such a restrained palette of materials, form, function and spatial flows is key here. The high chroma value of cabinetry and custom items provides enough visual interest and warmth against what can be a stark build material.
