Timber origami

In what seems to be a growing fascination of mine with Brazilian based design, this week “starchitect” Marcio Kogon of MK27 delivered me House 53. Completed in 2009, this 330 square metre, 3-story contemporary home is located in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The site is quite long and somewhat narrow measuring 10 metres wide and 30 metres in length. Strict Sao Paulo city building constraints defined the volume of the build. A third story was only possible by respecting the lateral setbacks of the site and neighbouring properties.

The house was conceived as a wood and concrete monolithic block with a third concrete and glass volume adorning the second story. Due to the site’s small frontage and volume, the “box’s” edges at the front and rear had to make the most of the available light, which explains the large windows. These windows seem almost cinematic in scale.

The major design element is the Brise soleil which encase the site and provide the base to the palette of materials. Kogon’s concept was for the house to be completely closed off or completely open. These brises as well as providing protection from the hot Brazilian sun provide the much needed privacy for the bedrooms on the second floor.

The front boundary gate which follows the same design language as the brises wrapping the house camouflage the points of entry and openings making them impossible to distinguish. The site reads as one pure single volume when closed off but folds back crisply like timber origami.
