In extraordinary interiors it is a harmony of design elements and principals that create truly spectacular spaces. Delphine Krakoff of Manhattan based design firm Pamplemousee Design has orchestrated a visually distinctive interior that incorporates cutting-edge design and spirited contemporary art. This stately brownstone which when purchased was a small apartment complex built around the turn of the century required a complete gut and renovation to be transformed in a single family home. The architecture of the home is simple and stark. The interiors follow a plan of lively modern luxury that is strikingly unique in execution. For such a stately home the rationalisation and stacking of space is somewhat untraditional but based around the family desires more than convention.

Krakoff ’s chic, graceful touch is everywhere, from the inset panels of translucent glass in the couple’s closets to the curvaceous lines of a black-and-white-tiled Deco-modern bathroom to the gym’s porthole-lined steel wall and sliding doors. Krakoff has created a rug for the living room featuring long, slender strips of calf hair references a timber floor, but in a softer, more opulent vein. Equal to Krakoff ’s beautifully crafted backdrops are the eye-catching furnishings she assembled for the home. Most prominently featured of all is Mattia Bonetti – a rock-crystal light fixture in the entrance, a sinuous bespoke lacquer desk in the study, and a circular metallic table in the family room, plus an impressive suite of furniture in a style that might be described as nouveau Art Nouveau built specifically for an alcove off the dining area. The central component that pulls the whole house together is the masterfully minimalist staircase, its smooth white-plaster walls winding elegantly upward.
