Contemporary cool

Freelance fashion stylist Sara Cooper has created this stunning home for her new family in the Upper Eastside of Manhattan in New York City. With classical bones to the apartment such as herringbone floors as well as wall and ceiling mouldings- an interesting conversation between stylistic periods plays out along this backdrop. Part Hollywood Regency, part Miami Art Deco and definitely some rock and roll – the spaces are as considered as the objects which inhabit them.

With a diverse art and furniture collection, Cooper is obviously well versed in design. Design classics sit alongside custom pieces – the side board of  Burl wood veneer and Lucite legs seems a contemporary reinvention of perhaps the work of design great Milo Baughman. The Deco elements – to which I am particularly fond – play out as black lacquer doors and palm leaf wall paper in the hall. A fabulous juxtaposition to the crisp white and somewhat monochromatic choices of the living spaces.

For me the hero of this apartment is the bespoke dining banquette and table. Casual but completely glamorous in a 1970’s exquisite diner-type way. The green marble reads as almost precious malachite atop the gilt drums. The tufting of the dark smoky saddle leather, emerald green mohair bench style seating with yet more Burl wood veneer makes for a completely outrageous dining room! I’m in love!
