This strong and masculine apartment was born from a complete renovation undertaken by Spanish firm Vaillo Irigaray Architects. The program called for a new language to be employed for the home that would take it from a traditional space to something where boundaries became fluid and scale the new focus.
Set against the sparse background of soapy oak flooring and dark timber joinery, the designers installed curtains to all walls with the effect, as they put it, of “disfiguring backgrounds, blurring space continuity and generating some thrilling chambers.” Indeed, the blanket use of the curtains – especially in sectioning off room such as the kitchen, dining room and walk-in robe – work to make the apartment as versatile as possible and the floor plan can be easily configured depending on use and to create the all-important play on scale.
Committing to so much of one design element is a brave move, however in this case the result are incredible.
