taking a Modern Approach
Located in Toronto and designed by Drew Mandel Architects, this home is defined by its materiality, volume and light. Surrounded by homes that are near identical in style and size, the architects were faced with the challenge of creating a modern home for a young family while respecting the aesthetic of the neighbourhood. To achieve this the house has been built within the setbacks and scale of its neighbours yet takes a contemporary approach in its outcome with large window set against grey tile cladding and board-formed concrete walls and an open and free-flowing floor plan.
Internally, the house is marked by clean lines and the juxtaposition of materials with only three colours employed – white, grey and timber. The kitchen is a perfect example with the white joinery set against the rich timber walls of the adjoining dinning room. The furniture follows suit with simple tailored pieces used sparingly throughout (I’m mad for the blue curved sofa!). This house a respective addition to the street while subtly expressing its own modern character.
