like a wise old soul

If minimalism were on one of the end of the continuum, The Siam would indeed be on the other. Located in Bangkok’s royal district Dusit, The Siam is every bit eccentric as it’s owner, Krissada Sukosol Clapp and the Bill Bensley design team, who together have breathed new life into the 3-acre real estate parcel that included a cluster of century-old homes. The 39-room boutique hotel originally conceived by Clapp to house his personal art collection is undeniably quirky with scores of art deco references, customised design details on every scale and Thai antiquities layered throughout.

The presiding palette of black, white and neutrals, timber lacquered in Japan-black, tactile textiles and tiles, and thoughtful punches of colour accented here and there deliver a rich, textural setting for each of the artefacts proudly on display to tell their story. Each suite is utterly unique; there is a suite brimming with all things military from turn-of-the-century military hats to original medals, swords and maps. Another suite teems with culinary relics from vintage menus and recipe books to restaurant signboards. Every space and surface takes on the life of a mini-museum and feels a little bit like a wise old soul is sharing his or her story with you. Bespoke is in, homogeneity is out.
