Local Attraction – Sorrento
My interest in this week’s project, apart from the beauty of the house, is that it is from my home town of Sorrento on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Nestled amongst the iconic Moonah trees, this home is a considered and calm response to the surrounding landscape and has been designed to recede into the block while creating a living environment on an impressive scale.
Externally, the materials used – zinc cladding, render and local stone – have been chosen for their durability, materiality and because they will age over time further enhancing the homes connection to the landscape.
This connection with the landscape is further enhanced internally with a materials program that pulls together the soft earthy tones found in the coastal environment. Texture is added through timber cladding, stone tiles and the locally quarried stone carried through from outside.
Knowing the area and knowing the amount of times a Hampton’s manse or Spanish villa are built, it’s a thrill to see a home that sympathetically responds to the location does it will complete style!
