Island Life

Here’s a shout out on another stunning project by SCDA Architects. Located in the-barely-touched Gaafu Alifu Atoll, the Park Hyatt Maldives (formerly Alila Hadahaa) was the first new build in the archipelago to adhere to EarthCheck principles throughout the design, construction and operational stages.
From the outset, the challenge was how to insert a program of 50 villas and resort facilities without endangering the equilibrium of island life on land and under water. As such, the ocean currents were followed closely with the construction of the overwater villas taking place during low tides only. Villas are orientated to best deal with the tropical climate, feature cross ventilation and are topped with angled overhanging planes (inspired by the sails of boats) to aid sun shading – these roofs also harvest rainwater.
Exacting geometry and minimal embellishments reign supreme; the only departure from the architect’s signature clean-cut lines is in the arrival pavilion. To replicate the Maldivian dhoni boat, local craftsmen were commissioned to create an oversized upturned hull using authentic timber species, dimensions and details. The end result is a light-filled space that feels like an open enclosure, one that embraces the landscape and all its elements, the perfect introduction to island life.
