The Collage House Mumbai
One of the biggest influences on architects can be environment and history, but the way in which designers interpret and translate that influence can be very different. S+PS Architects in Mumbai, India have taken the local narrative of design – that is to say found object, ad hoc, collaborative building – to create an incredible family home to house four generations of one family. Further, they have taken traditional design elements and used them to the advantage of the occupants and the building as a whole.
Built around a central courtyard designed to give privacy from the neighbours on all sides, the house uses a combination of materials to pay homage to the local vernacular of recycled architecture and also to the future with fresh clean lines of glass and concrete.
The furniture throughout is simple yet playful and helps to continue the open airy feeling formed with the expanses of glass looking into the courtyard. For me, the greatest achievement of the house the way in which S+PS Architects have made what must be a highly functional and busy home look so effortless and cool…a triumph!
