Craftsmanship in the West Village
A fantastic design project can have its origins in all sorts of things, from a dazzling work of architecture to an exotic destination. But the spark for the interiors that London and New York based designer Rafael de Cárdenas fashioned for a stylish young client’s Manhattan penthouse was, surprisingly, a pair of beige armchairs. Surprising as Cárdenas is known for his bold use of colour.
This two floor penthouse in the West Village is designed to be light, luxurious and takes advantage of the buildings Art Deco character. A restrained and muted palette is used throughout to act as counterpoint to the client’s extensive contemporary art collection and furniture. A favourite moment for me is the cream hand-painted lacquer walls as a backdrop to the custom brass, copper and walnut hexagonal table under a stunningly brilliant Baccarat chandelier! A Deco style brass stairwell showcases a vibrant wallpaper installation – another incredible moment in this home! Perhaps the most astonishing moment is the hand painted malachite ceiling in soft hues of beige, bone and muted golds. A commitment to craftsmanship and art.
Playfulness, youth and fun alongside extraordinary pieces with serious provenance is what is standout here. The apartment is a triumph of restrained elegance for De Cárdenas but that doesn’t mean he’s given up on the bold strokes he’s known for. Stay tuned!
