Factory Fresh – London

Following a former life as a garment factory and subsequent rebirth as a residence and office 10 years ago, this home has once again been transformed to give the owners a fresh perspective on the space and better suited living conditions.

Overseen by East London firm Paper House Project and located in London’s Bethnal Green, the program involved expanding the living quarters to give more space and light and to add a second bedroom. To achieve this, the firm opened up a previously enclosed central staircase by adding glazed walls. The effect is a light-filled central atrium that acts as a central focal point, together with the sculptural pendant light, for the house.

In what is an essentially very internally open, yet externally closed off home, the designers have cleverly used frosted glass walls to give privacy while at the same time allowing the natural light brought in by the central atrium to be cast to all corners of the home.

The interior finishes and furnishings are clean, crisp and at ease with the site former history as a factory. The joinery too follows this narrative with a stainless steel kitchen anchoring the ground floor.
