International style revival – Tel Aviv

The International Style coined by Philip Johnson in the 30’s refers to a series of principals most commonly associated with the Bauhaus movement. Rectilinear forms, light and taut planar surfaces that have been completely stripped of applied ornamentation and decoration with open interior spaces typify these interiors.

With this in hand Studio Raanan Stern have transformed a 1970s building in Tel Aviv. The original apartment which had been divided into smaller spaces is now a light filled home. By rearranging space typologies, an elongated space has become the new, open living area with windows at one end that keep it well lit. Throughout, the apartment uses five shades of grey with varying levels of gloss, which help highlight the black elements and changes between space uses.

The new dining room and kitchen are placed on the exterior side by the windows and the centre of the apartment is the lounge/living area with large wooden shelving on one side and steel-framed glass doors that lead to the study on the other. Incorporating Walnut and brass is a nod to the apartments 70’s heritage and fresh take on the Bauhaus style.
