Voids & Volumes – Spain

With an impressive and extensive art collection in mind, 05 AM Arquitectura have created this home near Barcelona, Spain. The program for the house has been devised around four large angular volumes that centre on an inner patio. The magic in these volumes, and for the art being displayed in the house, is the double-height voids that connect each volume. These voids provide gallery-like space for art and also for the concrete-formed spiral staircase which takes people sweeps people from the ground to the upper floor.

Moreover, the voids delineate the volumes into their function – living, dining, bedrooms and garaging. The inner patio works to create an axis that allows the volumes to fan out to allow maximum light in but also give privacy from the street and neighbouring houses.

Throughout, the materials used range from raw concrete, polished concrete, bright bursts of colour (I love the green balustrade of the spiral staircase), soft timbers and expanses of glazing work together to add to the sense of an art gallery and home in one – sparse and utilitarian, but also warm and inviting.
