Flinders Farmhouse

Farmhouses are places for wicker baskets, plaids & checks and lots of pine furniture right? WRONG. Melbourne-based Canny Architecture have re-defined this country pile as a seriously cool, and in this case extremely handsome, space that follows the characteristics of a traditional farmhouse – relaxed, comfortable and not too precious – but delivers it in a moody, dark package that seems perfectly suited to its location in Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula.

In renovating the existing house the most dramatic change was to the exterior colour. The soapy charcoal colour works perfectly with the soft bushland colours surround the house and sets the tone for the interior beyond the impressive front doors.

Inside, the colour is carried through and punctuated by varying shades of grey with copper and the stunning rusted chimney breast providing moments of drama. The furniture is minimal with a focus on clean lines, timbers, natural linens and leather.

What I love most about this project is the honesty in execution – there is no gimmickry in the architecture or interiors and as the architects put it, “the moody interiors deliver a unique composition of textures and colours to take this country home to the next level in style and sophistication.”
