Winds of Wine

Like a pewter ribbon ripped from a perfectly wrapped present, the roofline of the Viña Vik Hotel in Millahue, Chile barrels down the landscape as if it were writhing in the winds of the valley in which it sits. Clad in titanium this space age material punctuates and gleams atop perfectly rusted iron, copper and steel. Perhaps an uneasy juxtaposition in what is such a magnificent landscape – and this hotel is all about the landscape.

Floor to ceiling glass in all 22 individually decorated suites focuses your gaze outward to the breathtaking scenery beyond. Nestled between 12 valleys and 12,000 hectares of pristine forest, the Viña Vik is an incredible winery designed by Alexander and Carrie Vik in association with architect Marcelo Daglio.

With obvious comparisons to Gehry, this roofline feels less crumpled paper to which he is famed but more “valley scape” – as if it mimics the undulations which surround it.

Showcasing some of the most recognisable design pieces as well as local artist’s work this winery is definitely on my holiday destination list!
