Crisp white box

David Mann, founder of MR Architecture + Decor, completely reimagined this typical pre-war apartment in Manhattan’s Carnegie Hill neighbourhood. The clients: discerning art collectors and their young daughters. The brief: to showcase their extensive art collection in spaces where the kids can have sleepovers and movie nights all in a crisp white box! No small feat.

Taking the home back to a shell Mann has rationalised the spaces from this previously warren like home. The walls then painted in gallery-like white. Clean, crisp and nonnegotiable. Their extraordinary collection of art provides the ornamentation and interest here. The furnishings are kept tame and simple using neutral-hues and glass as to not compete with the bold, graphic art.

What I really enjoy is Mann’s bold use of a semi-precious stone in the bathroom. He has masterfully continued the graphic story and tone of the home even into the more private spaces. The use of Amethyst as a shower wall is super luxurious, perhaps even decadent. I love it!
