A Classic French Home Filled With Sottsass
The long and eclectic career of the architect and designer Ettore Sottsass, a leading figure of the 1980s Memphis group, is on vivid display in the ornate 18th-century Rue de Grenelle apartment in Paris of the architect and designer Charles Zana – whose work we love!
While Zana, not typically known for a Memphis emphasis in his aesthetic – certainly incorporates the bold use of colour and shape motifs. The Memphis aesthetic, known for its brash primary palette has lately experienced a revival with designers such as Kelly Wearslter and Ben Medansky paying homage also.
Three of Sottsass’ glazed ceramic totems dominate Zana’s apartment – impressive and joyful, they stand guard on the parquet de Versailles, adjacent to chairs and tables of Zana’s own design amid the haute-bourgeois sage-painted boiserie walls. It’s such a complex juxtaposition but Zana, like Sottsass, inhabits that most interesting place between art and architecture
