An Australian designer’s home
Rob Mills creates exceptional homes. He and his team are responsible for some truly innovative and inspiring projects in Australia and across the globe. So when it came to designing his own home, it is no surprise it is just that – unique, resolved and with his own brand of masculine glamour.
Originally a cardboard factory in the leafy Australian suburb of Armidale in Melbourne Victoria, Rob Mills Architecture (RMA) has transformed the cavernous interior “with broad sweeping gestures” that play to the strengths of the buildings envelope.
The materiality used here is restrained in terms of the number but bold in their application and interactions. The walls are rendered in stucco, the stone floors a grey/white veined marble with traces of brownish-red, and the exclamation point is the brass kitchen which is feels more installation piece than domestic necessity. This brass element is carried through the rest of the home in the deep door reveals and punctuations on joinery.
Australian design at its best!
