A Church to Call Home – New Zealand
The concept for this home, located on Waiheke Island, New Zealand and designed by local firm Vaughan McQuarrie, started from the idea that the centre of the house would be a meeting place in the same way a church acts as a focal point in a small village.
The church in this design is a soaring double-height room with full-height windows and a mezzanine at each end, which creates a multi-layered space that does double-time as living and sleeping quarters. The sleeping quarters are reached via an impressive helical stair that is more sculpture that structure and adds a stark contrast to the natural, un-finished materials palate. As the architect explains, the pre-cast concrete “in combination with exposed steel beams and timber floor beams allow the primary structure of the main space to become the finished fabric.”
Tucked away in a secluded inset on the island, this home is the perfect little village unto itself and the perfect place for the clients to escape!
