The Light & the Land

In a laid back, yet exclusive corner of California, Clint Eastwood has built a town around a golf course called Tehama. The name Tehama is Native American and means “abundance of nature,” a term which could not be better suited to this recently designed house by Studio Schicketanz. The architects describe their design as  ‘producing a deep exploration into the ways in which a structure can merge with and arise from a very specific ecological language’ and indeed the house itself appears to have been drawn straight up from the ground on which it is built.

With an emphasis on ensuring the entire house is connected with the land and sky, the interiors are a sympathetic palate of stones, plaster work and timber and all in tones that draw inspiration from the surrounding environment. ‘Indoor and outdoor spaces flow seamlessly together through the barest hint of doorways and enclosure; everywhere is permeated by sun and sky,’ explains the architect.

The end result is a house that feels as much a part of the land as the trees and sky that surround it.
