Tradition meets Sottsass in LA

I pondered this week on what should be my final post for 2018. Looking back over the incredible design we have discovered, dissected and discussed I wanted to try and show you something that I believe is truly unique and new – of course I wanted it to be playful, colourful and joyous – just like the holiday period.
The answer had to be Kelly Wearstler. A contemporary design force who to me, enjoys success like no other in the industry. A published author (whose books I treasure), has accessories and objet, lighting and furniture, wallpaper and fabrics sold around the globe AND She designs retail, hotels and homes for the rich and famous!
This home in Los Angeles California belongs to comedian Sebastian Maniscalco and his artist wife Lana Gomez. Wearstler and Gomez have been connected for a number of years; Wearstler in fact has a large canvas behind her desk at her LA studio.
Like Gomez’s work the background palette here is colourful, textural and bold. Using what most would consider to be quite a traditional or classical wallpapering technique of Cannon/ Bullock papers, Wearstler here combines them in a way which is dynamic and lively. The timelessness this technique brings to the home allows for some very bold decorative pieces overlaid.
Wearstler has used vintage and new furniture pieces that are gutsy and creative. Moments of Sottsass, Memphis and Post-Modern adorn blond timber floors throughout. These incredible furniture selections have a character that makes them almost seem alive – a testament to Wearstler and the trust of her clients. This home nourishes my creative appetite!
