Back to School
Taking on the loft conversion in this former school, Dutch firm Eklund Terbeek have infused a contemporary interior within the existing heritage elements to create a home that is both modern while at the same time telling the story of this historic building.
Reorganising the program of the building to maximise space and flow, the firm combined two former classrooms to make a large and expansive living, dining and kitchen area. Internal joinery and fittings have been left purposefully simple and clean to allow the original architecture to feature.
By far my two favourite features are the retained toilets which have been made into a main bathroom with the stalls finding new purpose as a shower and a toilet (surprise!). My other favourite is the original mustard yellow tiles – so chic with the expanses of white and concrete and the perfect historical ribbon to tie the interior together.
