YULPARITJA – a story of time and of creation

Given today is the date that marks Australia Day, which signals the beginning of our great young country. Today I acknowledge and pay respect to one of the most beautiful and longest living indigenous cultures in the world, and I hope that one day soon we can change the date to allow our First Peoples begin to heal.
The work of the Yulparija people is truly contemporary art and is based on the people’s experience of the traditional existence as native Australians. Traveling by foot from jila to jila, their story is one of survival in a harsh landscape; it is a story of unity and the importance of working together for the collective good of the community. Additionally, it is a story of time and of creation as the artists focus on sites specific to significant mythological stories.
With extraordinary simplicity, they challenge the viewer’s perception of the desert landscape. Additionally, the work brings to light the complex issues relating to the impact of white settlement on the lives of Indigenous Australians.
Designer Rugs’ new handknot collection YULPARITJA is a vibrant celebration of artists from the Bidyadanga community, and of their memories of journeys taken throughout their country.
