Bondi Icon
Bondi rates as one of the most iconic places in Australia. It conjures up images of summer days, surfers, sun, sand and the best of Australian lifestyle. This project, completed by Tobias Partners and located a literal stone’s throw from Bondi Beach, is the perfect modern interpretation of this relaxed lifestyle.
Starting with a 1980s home, Tobias Partners were tasked with transforming the building into a bright, airy and highly-workable family home that could not only withstand the daily life of a busy family but also be a generous space to display the family’s eclectic art collection.
Low-ceilings from the original 80s build were one of the main challenges to be overcome and, through careful structural work, the firm were able to raise the ceilings and open rooms previously closed off to each other with the immediate effect of allowing light and air to permeate through the home.
Speaking of the project, the firm notes that “unique features of the home include a copper fireplace, a pool cut into existing rock, terrazzo flooring and beeswax plaster walls.” Add to that a show stopping pink bathroom and this home is bound to be just as iconic as the beach on which it sits.
