evoking visual splendour – Emma Hack

Emma Hack is an Australian artist working in the unique medium of body paint installation and photography. Best known for her Wallpaper series (2005-2010) – in which she painstakingly camouflaged the human form by hand painting her models into the remarkable designs of the late Florence Broadhurst. Emma’s diverse artwork collections draw inspiration from the unique Australian flora and fauna, as well as Oriental influences. Her highly sought after ‘Native Mandala, ‘Birds of a Feather’, ‘Utopia’ and ‘Birds of Prey’ collections feature native animals and live birds resting on the models arm or hands, connecting her muse to the environment and enhancing the illusion of her body art.
Hack’s recent collaboration with iconic brand, Designer Rugs evokes the visual splendour of her work with a hand tufted wool and bamboo silk collection.
Managing Director Yosi Tal said the final rug designs were exotic and compelling.“Hand tufted in exquisite detail, the photographed female form is captured through subtle designs and shifting wool and bamboo silk hues.
Incorporating human forms through careful translation of Emma’s sharp and balanced photography proved to be a unique challenge however our interpretation of depth of field and layering has created a truly exceptional collaboration. Her work evokes a rich array of visual narrative and magical realism, and our rug collaboration seeks to capture this visual splendour for our clients,” Tal said.
“I was fortunate to be working with Phillipa Cowdrey at Designer Rugs on my designs. They are based on three recent artworks and I feel they stay true and relate to the original designs. I am very proud of the finished product, especially the nuances of colour and bamboo silk details,” Hack said.
