Inside Out Brickworks Home of the Year – Winners
The inaugural Inside Out Brickworks Home of the Year Awards attracted entries from across the country, revealing some of the best residential projects in Australia right now. The awards are a celebration of modern Australian homes that are built with design, purpose and excellence – and the architects behind them.
Hosted by Inside Out magazine and Brickworks Building Products, the awards drew submissions from the country’s most admired architects, highlighting extraordinary standards in the architecture, design and construction industries.
The judges included editor of Inside Out, Eliza O’Hare, Brickworks Brett Ward, and Dean of Architecture at University of Queensland, Cameron Bruhn.
“This may be our first year, but the enthusiasm for modern Australian homes has been overwhelming,” says Eliza O’Hare. “The criteria was big on clever design and thoughtful interiors, with an eye on sustainability and the use of smart materials.”
Brett Ward adds, “The calibre of talent that we have seen from across the country is truly remarkable. We are honoured to be a part of this prestigious accolade that showcases some of Australia’s most brilliant designs.”
The Inside Out Brickworks Home of the Year Award 2019 was given to Kennedy Nolan Architects for their Caroline Street project, an extension to an Edwardian home in Melbourne with dramatic contrasting elements and a show-stopping pool.
The award for Best Use of Materials: BRICK was collected by Renato D’Ettorre Architects for the impressive GB House and its bold and inventive use of the material throughout. This new build on a coastal clifftop was so notable, it remarkably took out the Best New Home Build award as well.
Winning Best Sustainable Project was Adam Kane Architects for Yandoit Cabin, an off-the-grid weekender in Victoria that proved style need not be sacrificed for sustainability.
Best Home Renovation went to Ian Moore Architects for their light-filled warehouse conversion in Redfern, created within a shell that seamlessly blends old and new. The overwhelming standard of entries also resulted in two surprise Highly Commended recipients.
For the Best Home Renovation category Bustle House by FMD Architects stood out, and in the Best New Home Build, Sandy Point House by Kennedy Nolan was especially admired. “Congratulations to our winners,” says Eliza O’Hare. “We are just thrilled at the response from the
Australian industry.” The intimate awards dinner took place at the Brickworks Sydney Showroom on Tuesday October 22, attended by industry and media.
