Birds and the Bees – from House of Heras

After the runaway success of the first collection in 2018, I am thrilled to present a second rug collection from House of Heras – ‘Birds and the Bees’. This collection explores Australian fauna and flora, which is sure to create a buzz (pardon the pun) in the interiors space! Designer Rugs are well known for their compelling designs and exclusive partnerships with Australia’s most iconic and unique designers, and this collection is no exception.

House of Heras is a boutique design studio led by award winning designer Silvana Azzi Heras, who specializes in highly decorative designs applied to a variety of mediums including wallpapers, fabric, crockery and stationery. With 17 years as the Head Designer of Bazmark, Silvana’s work on films such as The Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge and more has been widely recognized.  Her time on these award-winning projects have contributed greatly to her sense of style and colour sophistication.

This new collection sprung from Silvana’s fascination with Australia’s native bee population – their beauty, variety and their vulnerability. “We were looking at so many different types of bees and how intricate and beautiful each species was and in a moment of inspiration I knew these bees needed to be the focus of my next range,” says Silvana. “From there I started researching more exotic birds and flowers to see what else I could incorporate into the pieces.”

While still retaining the nod to the Arts and Crafts movement of the previous collection, these new designs have a deeper and more opulent colour palette of teal green, burgundy and coral, inspired by 70’s design. “I’ve always had a love of the 1970s…I still have vivid memories of specific clothes, homewares and packaging from around my childhood home during those early years.”

Consisting of four rectangular rugs, and one round rug, the collection is hand tufted in New Zealand wool with highlights of shimmering bamboo silk. These luxurious rugs are equally at home in a federation style home as an opulent hotel, and everything in between. All five designs can be custom sized, shaped and coloured to suit any interior.
