Off-grid family sanctuary – NZ
Overlooking Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand, Te Toka (The Rock) is a thermally efficient, off-grid family home and private sanctuary for its owners. The 5-bedroom home was designed to maximise views towards Kingston and Glenorchy, whilst being nestled into the hillside to provide privacy and limit the views from neighbouring properties.
Innovative construction systems were a key component to Rafe Maclean Architects and the project outcome. Insulated Concrete Formwork was used for the exterior and interior 4.6m high walls forming the airtight barrier and thermally insulated envelope for the building. Prefabricated engineered timber roof panels provided a lightweight and fast solution for the large spans. Hydronically heated screed flooring, triple-glazed aluminum clad timber windows and a ballast roof enclose the house.
Focusing on simplicity, functionality and performance, the outcome is an enduring home for current and future generations
