A Grade II Listed farmhouse is given a new life
An extensive refurbishment, reconfiguration and contemporary extension to a Grade II Listed farmhouse and barn in Kent UK. Gregory Phillips Architects reconfigured the ground floor plan and added a contemporary glazed extension housing the new kitchen, the property now provides the family with an arrangement suited to open plan living, while maximising views of the idyllic rural setting from the rooms they spend the most time in.
The modern kitchen extension forms a link between the old farmhouse and the barn which was previously an isolated space and largely unused. Through attention to detail, proportion and scale, the studio designed an extension which complements and respects the character of the existing farmhouse and barn yet stands alone as a bold sculptural form in its own right.
The transition and relationship between interior and exterior spaces have been carefully considered. The proposed landscaping was designed and detailed by Gregory Phillips Architects to complement the character of the extension and gently integrate the sculptural form of the extension in to the surrounding landscape.
The refurbishment of the existing house included renewal of all mechanical and electrical services as well as alterations to the layout in order to maximise natural light and rationalise the plan. The palette of materials and detailing creates a contemporary aesthetic that works alongside and complements the traditional character of the property.
